It's a saying that's been around forever, and The Free Dictionary by Farlax defines the acronym, you can't teach an old dog new tricks as "something that you say which means it is difficult to make someone change the way they do something when they have been doing it the same way for a long time You're never going to teach your father at the age of 79 to use a computer. You can't teach an old dog new tricks, you know."
I have tried with numerous attempts to get the beloved dog to go to work for me, but he's an old dog. Tricking with treats didn't work either. He just looked at me and laughed, if he could speak he would say "you must be joking hahahaaaa!"
That's not a smile, it's a laugh... trust me.
